What is the gospel?

Applicable SFC Value: B.R.I.D.G.E.

“Gospel” – the most important thing in our lives is the Good News; we readily share that message of hope in our words and deeds. John 8:12

Applicable SFC Brah-verb:  BRAH-verb #24

“The gospel is not a suggestion…”

The gospel is a demand from God for sinners to be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ.

STORY:

One major issue has been getting a lot of attention lately between me and my local SFC buddies. The gospel.

What is the gospel? I know that I am supposed to be sharing the gospel. I have heard of gospel music. People say, “That’s the gospel truth” as if this gospel qualifies even truth itself. Then there is the Bible, that is called the gospel too, right? Or is the gospel just the story of Jesus recorded in the four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? If that’s the case how am I to share the gospel on a two or five minute chairlift ride? What really is the gospel?

We are not sharing the gospel with someone when we say that God has a purpose for their life, or that Jesus loves them, or even that they can have a personal relationship with Jesus. That is diluted and is not the gospel. First we must understand our problem: sin. We are separated from the only holy and righteous God because of sin, we are sinners and therefore we deserve nothing but death. Second we must understand God’s intervention to save us. God sent Jesus Christ to die in our place and be raised from the dead so that through faith in Christ alone we can be reconciled with God and be with God for eternity.

The gospel is a demand from God for sinners to be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ. It is not a suggestion. It requires a response, either repentance of sin or denial of Christ. The hearer’s response results in either salvation or continued damnation. “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). It is then that a person is forgiven and promised life with God for eternity. This gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).

Application for SHRED LIFE:

The only reason we, as shredders, are still on planet earth is to share the Gospel. (Matthew 24:14) We can worship God better in heaven. We can experience love and life beyond anything this world will ever know when we reach heaven. Fellowship will be greater in heaven. Our desires will be fully satisfied in heaven (not even in the sickest park or deepest pow). The one and only reason we remain on this planet is to preach the Gospel. Go and share what the Gospel is, this good news, this power of God so that our friends (and even total strangers) in the shred culture might be saved and then the end will come!
